Meet Gianna, Our 2019 Champion Child

A birth of a child is always an exciting time for any parent, but when you are told at 27 weeks that your 1-pound baby has to come out or it could die – this is not something that you prepare for. From day one, 10-year-old, Gianna Eusebio has fought for her life. Before the age of one, Gianna’s heart stopped, she was deemed blind, and her lungs filled up with fluids. But she is a fighter. Because she is so grateful to the Children’s Hospital-HSC Winnipeg staff for saving her life today she became the 2019 Champion Child for the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba.

“Today, I can see with glasses, I use an inhaler to open my lungs to breathe and my mom says I have fire running through my veins”, states Eusebio. “I owe my life to the Children’s Hospital and the people who support it. I know I am a miracle.”

For the next year, Gianna will represent Manitoba and be an ambassador for the 120,000 children who visit the Children’s Hospital every year. Next week, Gianna will travel to Florida to meet other Champions from across North America. There she will celebrate her achievements, and meet with international media, to help showcase what an amazing hospital and research institute we have here in Manitoba. On top of this, Gianna has set a goal to raise money to support the unit that saved her life, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Gianna is the first Filipino Champion Child in the history of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba and proud of her culture.

The Champions program, run by the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, honours remarkable children who have triumphed despite severe medical challenges. The Champions program is sponsored by Walmart Canada, and Air Canada.
